Contact Us →The question executives ask first
The honest answer
For someone with a board seat, a licence to practise, a public profile or a business that depends on their judgement being trusted, visibility is itself a safety concern. That concern is legitimate, and I do not try to talk families out of it. It gets planned for, in the same way the conversation itself gets planned for.
Not what happens, or whether it works. Who finds out. That is the first question I am asked in almost every executive family call.

What changes
The window is narrower. Senior people have less unstructured time, and the sober windows are often early morning or during travel. The circle is wider than it looks. Assistants, drivers, colleagues and household staff may notice an absence before family does.
There is more to lose from a clumsy attempt. A rumour started by an under-prepared conversation is very difficult to put back. Treatment location matters more. A programme in the person’s own city, where they may meet someone they know, is not always the right choice. Written records matter: what is documented, by whom, and where it goes.
What stays the same
The preparation. The family speaking with one voice. Treatment arranged in advance so a yes can be acted on the same day. A clear next step if the answer is no.
Discretion changes the logistics. It does not change what makes an intervention work.

High functioning is the usual pattern here
Most of the executives I am called about are performing. They close deals, chair meetings and appear entirely fine to everyone outside the household.
That is the defining feature of high functioning substance use. The damage is real and it is concentrated where nobody else can see it, which is also why families wait so long.

How I plan around privacy
Every conversation with me is confidential. Beyond that, planning covers who genuinely needs to be involved, where and when the conversation happens, how travel is arranged, which treatment options sit outside the person’s usual professional circle, and what is written down.
I will also tell you honestly what cannot be contained. A promise of total invisibility would be a promise I could not keep, and you should be wary of anyone who makes one.
Sometimes the person raising the concern is a colleague or the business rather than the family. That is a different conversation, and it is covered on the For Employers and HR page.
If someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911. If they are talking about not wanting to be here, call or text 988. Los Angeles County residents can reach the Department of Mental Health ACCESS line on 800-854-7771.

Frequently Asked
Usually a great deal can be contained with planning. I will be specific about what can and cannot, rather than promising more than I can hold.
Yes, and for professional families that is often the better option.
Reporting obligations vary by profession and jurisdiction. That is a question for your own counsel or licensing body, not for me. I can tell you what an intervention can practically do, and how it fits around that.
Written confidentiality arrangements are discussed on the first call. The specific policy wording is being finalised; I would rather describe it correctly in conversation than approximate it here.
Say on the first call if it is time sensitive. Availability varies.
The method is the same. The planning around privacy, timing and logistics is more involved, and that is what the first call is for.
