Interventionist in Calabasas
Sometimes the hardest conversation in a family isn’t the one with the person who’s struggling.
The short answer
An interventionist in Calabasas helps a family plan and hold a structured conversation with a loved one who is struggling. Lifestyle Interventions is a Los Angeles intervention and recovery advisory service founded by Chris Howard. Based in Los Angeles, the practice supports families in Calabasas, across California, and nationwide.
What we do
What is an interventionist?
Definition
An interventionist is a trained professional who helps a family plan and hold a structured conversation with a loved one who is struggling, and helps map the next step toward support.
Part of my job happens before anyone talks to your loved one. It’s getting the family on the same page first, because a divided family gives a struggling person somewhere to hide. I’m not there to take sides. I’m there to help you find the version of this you can all stand behind.

Who we serve
When the family can’t agree
This comes up more than almost anything else. One parent wants to act now. The other is afraid of overreacting or of pushing their kid away for good. Both of those instincts come from love. That’s what makes it so hard to sort out from the inside.
Here’s what I’d tell you if you called me. You don’t have to agree on how bad it is to agree on the next step. You just have to agree that what you’re doing now isn’t working. Many families blame themselves for not acting sooner. In most cases, they were doing the best they could with information that was confusing and incomplete.
Confidentiality
Adult kids who are still at home
Privacy is central to how we work. We understand that visibility and reputation can weigh on a family's decision to seek help.
Every conversation with us is confidential, and we plan each step with your family's privacy in mind.
The process
The two approaches I use
The Johnson Model is a direct, prepared conversation where the family speaks with one voice. The Invitational Model includes your loved one from the start, so there’s no surprise.
With a family that’s already split, I often lean toward the approach that lowers the temperature. We’ll decide that together once I understand your situation.

I travel nationally when a family needs me to. When treatment is the right next step, I coordinate with licensed providers. I do not run a treatment facility.
Who we help
Who we help
I work with families facing substance use, alcohol concerns, prescription misuse, and mental health struggles.
The approach is always shaped by the person and the family, not by a rigid template.

What to expect What to Expect When You CallThe first call is a confidential conversation. There is no obligation, no pressure, and no enrollment process at the start. For families, we will ask about the situation, the person, the history, and what has been tried. By the end of the call, you will have a clear sense of whether our work is the right fit and what the alternatives are if it is not. For clinicians, we will ask about the patient, the family system, and the clinical context. We will tell you honestly whether an intervention is what the situation needs, or whether something else is more appropriate.

Frequently asked Frequently asked questionsHalf our family thinks we’re overreacting. Should we wait?We are based in Los Angeles and support families in Calabasas. We come to you and plan around your family's needs. Our son is an adult. Can we even do this?Yes. An intervention isn’t about control. It’s about being honest with someone you love and putting a real option in front of them. What if he just walks out?He might. That happens, and it isn’t the end. A calm, prepared conversation leaves the door open in a way an argument doesn’t. Do you work out here?Yes. I’m based in Los Angeles and work with families in Calabasas and the surrounding areas, and I travel nationally when it’s needed. Do you provide treatment? That’s the part families underestimate. I help you line up the next step before the conversation, so a yes doesn’t turn into a week of phone calls. Do you provide treatment? No. I’m an advisory service. When treatment is the right step, I coordinate with licensed providers. |
