SUPPORT FOR SIBLINGS
Siblings often become the quietly functional ones while a family focuses on someone else. This page describes what siblings tend to carry, what you can reasonably do, and what you should not take on.

Definition
Parentification is when a child, or later an adult sibling, absorbs the parenting or emergency-handling role that the situation has left open. It is easy to slide into and hard to notice from the inside.
Parents are in crisis, one child is the focus of everything, and the others become quietly functional and quietly unattended. That is the pattern I see repeatedly, and it is worth naming.

What siblings carry
Family resources go where the emergency is, and siblings learn early not to add to the load. One child becomes the achiever who causes no trouble. Another becomes invisible. Guilt runs in two directions: guilt for being all right, and guilt for being angry about someone who is unwell.
Fear about themselves is common, particularly where there is family history. Grief for someone still alive is real, and rarely named.

The anger nobody permits
Siblings are often furious and feel they have no right to be. Anger at missed birthdays, ruined holidays, parents who could not be present, and at being expected to be endlessly understanding. That is not a character failing. You are allowed to love someone, want them well, and be angry with them at the same time.
Take part in an intervention if you want to. Siblings are often the most credible voice in the room, because they are peers rather than authority figures. Say what you have actually experienced, not what a parent wishes you would say. Set your own limits, which may differ from your parents’ and that is legitimate. Refuse the middleman role: carrying messages between your parents and your sibling exhausts you and helps nobody.
What siblings should not take on: responsibility for the outcome, becoming a second parent, or compensating by being the easy child. If you have children of your own, protecting your household is not disloyalty.
If someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911. If they are talking about not wanting to be here, call or text 988. Los Angeles County residents can reach the Department of Mental Health ACCESS line on 800-854-7771.
